Implementing a Business Operating System:
A Systems Approach for Achieving Bottom-Line Results

By Norma S. Simons

Introduction: Sustained Success

Every organization is faced with the need to create value for its shareholders.  There are several ways to create value.  However, what is important is the ability to perform actions that can yield sustained bottom-line results.  How is this achieved?

  • First, view the organization as a system composed of a collection of sub-systems that work together to produce desired results.
  • Second, develop the means to observe, measure and manage the activities within the subsystems.
  • Third, manage and improve the activities of selected subsystems in a way that will ensure the desired results of the whole system.
  • Finally, enlist all members of the organization to improve performance throughout the organization.

The Business Operating System should document performance and improvement actions taken, as this documentation becomes the knowledge base for a learning organization. Without this systems view, there will be sub-optimization where local goals are achieved at the expense of the entire system.
