Implementing a Business Operating System:
A Systems Approach for Achieving Bottom-Line Results
Display of Data
In the Business Operating System, there are special guidelines for displaying data. This facilitates ease of understanding of the data and improves the speed for decision-making.
In general, data is displayed with the use of trend charts or run charts. This displays behavior over time. The trend chart shows the behavior of the system, and, with established goal lines, identifies the gaps and the areas for improvement.
In addition to the trend chart, Pareto charts are used to be able to determine the drivers of the trend and the areas for focus if the performance displayed should change. For example, if machine efficiency were to be evaluated, then it is possible to track the down time of all equipment in a plant or in a particular focused factory and display this information on a trend chart. The Pareto chart would identify various categories that influence the downtime of equipment. Some categories might be, number of hours machines were down due to changeover, equipment failure, lack of material at the machine, lack of labor, or poor quality raw material. The largest item on the Pareto chart would indicate the area for focus for problem solving activity.
