Implementing a Business Operating System:
A Systems Approach for Achieving Bottom-Line Results

Performance Measures

The famous quote, “You cannot manage what you cannot measure.” is often used to emphasize the need to select and use measurements.  Using the right measures not only ensures an organization is focused on what is important, but also enables the evaluation of company performance against set criteria.

Performance measures can be defined as a quantitative means of evaluating the products and services in a system.  It has now become important to develop and use a balanced set of measures, which can reflect the overall progress of the company.

Performance measures must relate to the overall strategy and direction of the company.  If this does not occur, a company can find itself unable to move in a desired direction.  The method of measurement will depend on the history of the company, the industry type, and the unique needs of its customers.
