Implementing a Business Operating System:
A Systems Approach for Achieving Bottom-Line Results

Assignment to Collect Data

At the end of the workshop, participants are given an assignment to develop methods for data collection in preparation for the first review session.

A champion is identified for each measure.  The responsibility of the champion is to develop procedures for data collection, which defines how the data will be collected and identifies the individuals who will be responsible.  The data should be placed on a trend chart with a goal line.  In addition, the champions are required to identify and define the categories that will be used on the Pareto chart.

For example, if the team decided to consider he number of credit memos, then the champion would identify the source of the information to ensure accuracy of the data.  Then this will be placed on a trend chart.  The categories on the Pareto chart may be pricing errors, incorrect quantities, wrong parts, or poor quality.  These categories need to be clearly defined so that there can be a focus on the main areas that influence the trend chart.
