Business Operating System (BOS)

Business Operating System (BOS) is a disciplined methodology used to promote and manage continuous improvement.  It focuses on the assembly and analysis of data for key measures that are quickly reviewed and acted upon by a team.

This methodology is designed to establish customer-to-business alignment, to ensure cross-functional process accountability, and to establish metrics to drive customer satisfaction and business performance.

Using this system enables the company and/or Business Unit to:

  • Keep track of overall performance.
  • Facilitate continuous improvement.
  • Collect data in a standard format.
  • Solve problems with a disciplined approach.
  • Verify effectiveness of activities through data.

Our Business Operating System (BOS) training starts with a one-day Executive Overview.  The concepts of BOS are introduced and then top management is asked to evaluate the current organizational vision, mission, and critical customer requirements.  The organizational measures are then realigned to these strategic plans.

The rest of the organization then participates in a three-day workshop where they learn the tools of BOS and select measures for their department or business unit that align to the top key measures.  In this way the measures are from the top down have what Dr. Deming would define as “Constancy of Purpose.”  The main phases of BOS are:

  • Key Measurements
  • Documentation
  • Deployment
  • Review
  • Visual Management

Using these phases and a disciplined problem solving approach, the teams improve their processes, which also improves their key measurements.
