Advanced Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)

Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing is an engineering tool used to accurately describe parts and manufacturing tolerances. Basic GD&T is reviewed and advanced concepts are discussed and applied in a workshop format.

COURSE CONTENT

  • Advanced Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)

Module I: Review of Basic GD&T

  • Review the benefits of using GD & T
  • Basic rules
  • Changes in the standard
  • MMC, LMC, RFS, and bonus tolerance
  • Form tolerances
  • Planar datums
  • Datum targets
  • Feature-of-size datums
  • Orientation tolerances
  • Location tolerances
  • Runout tolerances
  • Profile tolerances
  • Review exercises

Module II: Advanced Concepts

  • Selecting the proper datums and symbols
  • Tangent plane modifier
  • Free state condition
  • Boundary concept for irregular features of size
  • Datums at virtual condition
  • Composite tolerancing
  • Calculating tolerance stacks / critical wall thickness
  • Gaging fixuturs and CMM inspection
  • Special considerations for plastics – draft angle, parting line control

Module III: Advanced Exercises

  • Review several generic drawings and interpret the GD & T
  • Discuss the process flow for applying GD & T
  • Review / discuss actual drawings (provided by the class)
  • Wrap-up

Note: Your company is encouraged to provide engineering drawings to be used for customized exercises in the course.
