Why Design for Six Sigma (DFSS)

Survival in today’s environment requires organizations to deliver a focused response to heightened customer expectations and demand for superior overall product and service performance. Providing defect free products and services therefore is not only preferred but assumed by the customer

Six Sigma: An Effective Tool for Health care

The Institute of Medicine defines quality in health care as “ ..the extent to which services for individuals and populations increase the likelihood of desired health outcomes and are consistent with current professional knowledge” (Institute Of Medicine 1990). This concept is widely accepted and it has seen the health care industry use a large variety of quality initiatives and metrics to track and respond to issues that impact patient care. Most of these initiatives have provided incremental improvement over the last several years. However the Institute of Medicine reports that medical errors may cause 98,000 deaths annually which results in the financial toll of $17 to $29 billion per year. With these and other challenges facing the industry there is a need for a more revolutionary approach to improving the quality of patient care. Six Sigma is a business model that has demonstrated in several industries that when properly used has enabled companies to achieve considerable reduction in defects and waste resulting in impact to the bottom-line.

The Pain of Statistics

“Why do we have to know and use statistics? I was never good at mathematics in school. I am not smart enough to understand”. These are the comments I hear very often whenever I teach our consult on a project that has anything to do with problem solving.

What is Statistics? Quite simply the ability to make decisions in the face of uncertainty. What does this mean? - Every time we are faced with data we need to understand the context of the data before an intelligent decision is made. Without this understanding then we are guessing. I often meet with engineers, managers and production personnel who do not understand the importance of statistics. This means that in many cases their ability to problem solving and understand logic and come to a root cause is often flawed.

The Misuse of Measurements

“When you can measure what you are speaking about and express it in numbers, you know something about it but when you cannot measure it, when you cannot express it in numbers, your knowledge is of a meagre and unsatisfactory kind”. This famous quote by Lord Kelvin (1824-1907) and others used such as “You cannot manage what you cannot measure” have made people realize that there is a need to use measurements. This week I came across some examples of the use of measurement that was hilarious if it was not so sad.

Performance Management: Customized Facilitation

Customized Facilitation: Performance Management moves away from considering only the performance of employees to a focus on the total organization, the metrics used to evaluate results, the review process, the actions taken to respond to poor performance and the alignment of all activities. Companies, who may have areas where they have experienced difficulties implementing a performance management system, may need a customized facilitation. This enables the development of a hands-on structure that will fit with the rest of the organization in a short period of time.
